According to Cooke and Tate (2011) “organizational project management maturity concept assumes a correlation between an organization’s capabilities in project management, program management, and portfolio management and its effectiveness in implementing strategy” (pg. 280). Organizations that have strong project management capabilities and maturity have a model for project managers to follow that will lead to their success. Successful organizations will have proper documentation and constantly update their processes. Curating processes towards the needs of the project team is a sign of an organization that’s culture promotes success and maturity. The structure established from these traits is what makes teams successful. Also, support from leadership is important because it will help project needs in a timely manner.

Lessons learned is a process that project teams need to conduct, so that they can be applied to and improved upon in future projects. Support from leadership is particularly important. Sponsors and customers that support projects will be sure to help and make sure problems are resolved as quickly as possible. Targeting areas for improvements are a way to fine-tune the project processes to make sure it is working as effectively as possible. Documentation will identify any room for improvement between projects. Cooke and Tate (2011) say documenting will show “best practices that, when repeated, can enhance project success in the future” (pg. 286). Another process by organizations to support project management is to standardize common processes. Standardizing will create a structure for the team, and make sure that other processes such as documentation are conducted, and applied to future projects.
