Religion and the Roles of Women

The Arabian Nights Issues in World Cultures I Writing Assignment I Write an essay on the following question based on the stories below. 1. Compare the later stories (the Story of the Two Viziers and the Story of Nur al-Din Ali ibn-Bakkar and the Slave Girl) to the earlier tales in the Arabian Nights in terms of their depiction of women. Although the Arabian Nights describes a patriarchal society in which men dominate women, women are not totally powerless. What sort of power do women have? 2. What role does religion play in these stories? Select three stories (one from the beginning, one from the middle, and one from the end) and discuss how the characters and stories reflect the values of medieval Islam. In your answer be sure to provide specific evidence (in the form of quotations) from the text with page citations. If using the standard text, you must include the page number in parentheses. If using a different text, you must give the page number for that edition and include an entry for the work in a works cited page. Standard citations (Chicago or MLA) must be used for other sources, if the student chooses to include evidence from other sources. It is not expected that the student will have to use texts not assigned on the syllabus. Every school day that the paper is late the grade will be dropped by one letter grade. The paper should be typed, three to four pages in length, double-spaced, with one inch margins and 12 point font size (preferably Times New Roman). The paper must be submitted to LU Learn as a word document.
