The Natural Flood Management literature investigation report

GY612  Field Investigation Report
For this coursework you will produce a fieldwork report which critically analyses the role that natural flood risk management (NFM) has to play in mitigating flood risk.  Note that these instructions REPLACE the indicative guidance given in the module brief.

You must use the literature to support your report. Your report should be split into the following sections where suggested word limits are given in brackets for the shorter sections:
1)    Firstly, a brief introduction situating NFM within the literature (150 words)

2)    Secondly, a quantitative assessment of the geomorphic impact of the leaky debris dams at the field site.  You could think about:
a.    Using the data derived from the River Habitat Survey (RHS) to support your answer
b.    Using the indices calculated from the RHS survey to support your answer (e.g. the Habitat Quality Assessment (HQA), the Habitat Modification Score (HMS))
c.     Using and annotating any photos you think support your answer (annotations don’t count towards the word count)

3)    Thirdly, a critical evaluation of the use of NFM measures in the Ouse Catchment. You could also think about:
a.    Firstly, critically evaluating how effective you think NFM measures will be at reducing flood risk in the Ouse catchment
b.    Secondly, comparing the field results from Pickeridge Farm to other sites across the Ouse catchment – to do this try looking at the online databases on the RHS web pages, have a look at the Sussex Flow Initiative website, and have a read over the EA documents – and
c.     Thirdly, comparing the NFM approach with other flood mitigation approaches within the Ouse catchment
d.    Lastly, discussing how you think the flood risk in the Ouse catchment should best be managed – this could be via a combination of approaches.

4)    Fourthly, a brief conclusion – summarising your findings and key suggestions of managing flood risk in the Ouse Catchment (150 words)

The report should be a maximum of 1500 words not including any diagrams, figure annotations, references or appendices.  Include a reference list at the end of the report. Full instructions for submitting work electronically are provided on StudentCentral under the Assessment link.
