OVERVIEW & PURPOSE The purpose of this activity is to design one or more persuasive messages which use the Elaboration Likelihood Model and Heuristic-Systematic Model of persuasion to convince multiple groups of stakeholders that your solution to a problem is the best. ACTIVITY Parking on the USA campus is a complicated issue, especially in light of increased enrollment and a growing focus on residential student experience. Students are concerned about finding parking spaces near their dorms and classroom buildings; faculty and staff are seeing their parking allotment shrink in favor of more student parking; administrators, including President Waldrop, would like to see the campus become more amenable to walking instead of driving. The University has decided to conduct a campus-wide referendum similar to the one carried out in the past couple of years regarding tobacco usage. You have been tasked with advocating for a particular solution, chosen from the list below. You will propose a communication message or group of messages which aim(s) to convince various audiences that your solution is the best one and, using the Elaboration Likelihood Model and Heuristic-Systematic Model, explain how your audiences will process your messages and successfully be persuaded. These messages could include on-campus physical or electronic advertising, direct contact with stakeholders, or other message types of your choice. SOLUTIONS (CHOOSE ONE) Option 1: Construct a parking garage near the center of campus where the main Central/Student Center lot is now, which will hold approximately 5x the cars of the current lot Option 2: Construct a parking garage near the planned football stadium site and provide additional JagTran and/or JagBike services to help get students to central campus Option 3: Restrict freshman students who live in campus housing from bringing a car to campus their first year and provide additional JagTran buses from housing areas to classroom buildings Option 4: Do not construct any additional lots/garages, but increase parking permit fees and use the money to fund additional JagTran routes, including some which service nearby off-campus housing like Campus Quarters Option 5: Leave the parking situation as it is for the foreseeable future DELIVERABLES In your writeup, be sure to: Choose one of the specific options described above to advocate Describe the specific types of messages you will use to persuade your audiences Identify specific groups of stakeholders in the issue and clearly explain how your proposed messages target each group for persuasion, using specific elements of the ELM and HSM to describe how the audiences will process the messages Identify specific obstacles to persuasion and how your messages aim to overcome them, again using the ELM and HSM to explain how.
